The faceless watcher : A Terrifying Roadside Horror Story

Girl sitting on ground at night facing a dark forest in a white dress

It is a 8 kilometer drive for Ann to reach the small town along the rural road. Her seven-year-old daughter was seated in the passenger seat.

It was supposed to be a simple night drive along the dark rural road, but what Ann and her daughter experienced became a terrifying horror story they would never forget.

But what Ann and her daughter saw that night… would follow them home.

They were heading to the small town to buy groceries for next week. Ann loved the peace of staying away from the small town.  But one evening changed her view of the place forever.

It was about 6.30 in the evening.  There were no street lights on the road, and cars' headlights sliced through the darkness.

“ Ma, look!” Lilly  shouted.”  There is a girl.” ….

Ann slowed down the vehicle and glanced towards the woods.

There was a strange girl seated near the haunted woods, wearing a long white dress and starting into the darkness.

She was facing the woods, wearing a long white dress, and had long hair.

Ann rolled down the window and called out, “ Hey! Are you okay? Do you need help?”

The silent girl did not respond, making the eerie roadside encounter even more unsettling.

 A cold silence followed.

“Hello… can you hear me?” Ann tried again, her words trembling slightly...

 Nothing.

The girl was completely still. Unnaturally still.

Not even the slightest movement.

Ann felt her heartbeat quicken, each thud louder than the last. A strange, creeping sensation crawled over her skin, as if something was terribly wrong… something she could not yet understand.

For a moment, she thought about stepping out of the car.

But something inside her, deep and instinctive, told her not to.

“ Let me inform the authorities once I reach the town,” she thought.

Ann parked the car at the supermarket car park and spotted a police officer standing near the pedestrian crossing.

Ann approached the officer and explained to him what she had seen in the woods.

“ She was wearing a white dress, “ Lilly added.

The officer gently patted Lilly’s head and said, “ Don’t worry. I will  call it in and have someone check it out.”

Ann was now relieved and continued the shopping. But she couldn’t easily forget that haunting image. “ Who is that girl?  Why was she out there alone in the dark?”

Ann and Lilly returned to the car with two big bags of groceries. They drove back home along the dark road. Lilly peered through the window, searching the surroundings.

Ann slowed near the spot where they had seen the girl, but she was gone. Ann felt guilty.

“ She was not there, Ma,” said Lilly.

“I should have helped her. What if something has happened to her?” she thought.

She drove the car away, feeling guilty and filled with questions.

Another ten minutes passed before Ann saw again.     This time, the girl sat in a patch of pale moonlight, facing the woods.

Still silent.  Ann's foot instinctively eased off the accelerator.  Lilly whimpered, covering her face with her hands.

“ Don’t stop, ma!  I am scared!’ Lilly whimpered, covering her face with her hands.

“Shh.. I’m here, " Ann whispered, though her own voice felt thin and uncertain.

Against her better judgement, she rolled the window down once more.

The words barely left her lips.

"Hello, are you okay?"

Nothing.

She called again. " Are you okay?"

Then…

The girl began to move.

Slowly… unnaturally ……..slowly …. Her head turned towards them.

Girl turning her head at night with no face in a haunted dark setting

Ann’s breath caught in her throat.

For a split second, everything went silent.

And then she saw it.

There was no face.

No eyes… No nose…. No mouth… just emptiness

Only a dark, hollow void where her face should have been.  An empty, endless blackness that seemed to swallow the moonlight itself.

Ann felt as if something invisible had struck her. Her chest tightened, and ice flooded her veins.

She couldn’t breathe.

 Couldn’t think.

Couldn’t look away.

A suffocating terror gripped her, freezing her body in place.

With great difficulty, she summoned her courage, closed the window, pressed the gas, and sped away.

The car lurched forward and tore through the darkness… leaving the faceless girl behind.

Sweat beaded on her forehead in the cold night.

Lilly peeked up. What happened, Mama?………..

“She was okay, Lilly. Don’t worry,” Ann whispered, trying to sound calm.

Back at home. Ann locked the doors, drew the curtains, and tried to be normal. But she couldn't control the fear; she was still sweating, and her pulse was racing.

Then came the sound of the siren. A police car pulled into the driveway. Ann sent Lilly into her room before stepping outside to meet the police officers.

One of them, a man in his fifties, stepped forward.

“Ma’am, we followed up on your report.” “ You are not the only person to see her.”

“What do you mean? Asked Ann.

“There have been several reports of a girl seated near the road at night.  But no one has ever found anyone there. “

Ann felt the blood drain from her face.

The officer said, “ About three years ago, a young girl was killed in a hit-and-run accident near the spot where you saw the girl. She was left alone to die in the woods. Her body was discovered a few days later.’

“They say her spirit  never found peace.”

“Some said she was searching for someone. But  afraid of showing her face.”

Ann closed her eyes, chill running through her spine.

She had seen her. The faceless girl. Now she understood why there was no face… only pain… sorrow…. desperate…..

Ann felt a deep sense of sorrow for the faceless girl now.

That night,  Ann lay awake, thinking of the faceless girl.

“How might she have looked when she was alive?” What was she doing at that time?  Schooling? … working ?…….. Who were her parents?…..

Thinking about the girl and drifted off to sleep. She suddenly woke up to the sound of the barking dog. The dog continued barking. It was midnight, about 12.30 pm. “Something is wrong. The dog might have seen something or someone,” she thought.

She pushed aside the window curtain and looked out the side. At first, there was nothing.

No movement. Just an empty night.

She began to pull the curtain back.

Then she froze.

Someone was there.

Near the gate …. Sitting perfectly still.

Her breath caught in her throat.

Even in the dim light, there was no mistaking it.

The long white dress.

The long hair.

The dark, motionless figure.

The unnatural stillness.

It was her.

The faceless girl.

And this time, the faceless spirit was no longer watching the woods...she was watching the house.
