The Old Woman Who Haunted the Farm | Horror Story
“In the silence of the fields,
the dead still whisper.”
A Return to Uncle Sam's Haunted Farmland
Sarah was excited because she would be visiting Uncle Sam's farmhouse after a long time. When she was a
little girl, she visited the place during the school break. “Joseph must have grown into a young man
now.” She thought of her cousin Joseph.
Uncle Sam's house stood alone in the middle of a haunted farm, surrounded by vast fields of corn, soybeans, barley, and canola. Memories of playing hide-and-seek with Joseph, fishing in the nearby river, and cooking their catch over a fire made from dry wood and leaves could never be forgotten.
It was wonderful to see Uncle Sam,
Aunt Mary and Joseph again. They shared childhood
memories and talked of Sarah’s parents, especially about Sarah’s father, who had passed away. The evening was filled with laughter and jokes.
The following day, around five
o’clock in the evening, Sarah borrowed Joseph’s bike for a ride. She was
admiring the beautiful landscape with the cool evening air. But just as the sun was setting, the tyre went flat.
It was a rough gravel road, and there was no light on the bike, making it difficult for Sarah to find her way.
Sarah began to push the bike home, and now, at six o’clock, the moon was visible in the sky, and the narrow path was almost swallowed by the shadows.Suddenly Sarah had a feeling that someone was following her. She could sense it.
The lonely farm road had become the setting for a terrifying paranormal encounter.
She stopped and turned around. Her heart nearly stopped.
What Sarah saw next made her blood run cold—a wide, unnatural grin stretched across the old woman's face, revealing broken, yellowed teeth coated with grime.
Terrified, Sarah abandoned the bike and ran as fast as she could, panting heavily until she burst into her uncle’s home. She was panting and drenched in sweat. “What happened?” her aunt asked. Sarah took a bit of time to get back to normal, and she told them what she had encountered.
Her aunt shook her head. “We
haven’t seen any old lady like that here. The woods can play tricks at night.
Maybe it was your imagination.”
Uncle Sam and Joseph went to
fetch the bike.
The same evening, they had a
joyful dinner in the backyard. They sang, cracked jokes, and enjoyed Uncle Sam’s
stories. Sarah forgot the terrifying experience she had earlier that day.
Later, everyone retired for the
night. But Sarah had left her Alice band outside. When she went to retrieve it,
a frightening whisper echoed from the darkness.
“Sarah…”
She froze. Her name had been
called in a cracked, rasping female voice. Slowly, she turned toward the banyan
tree.
The old lady stood beneath the ancient haunted banyan tree. She looked exactly as she had on the lonely road—her filthy, torn clothes hanging from her frail body, tangled grey hair covering much of her face, and the same impossibly wide grin exposing broken, yellowed teeth stained with grime.
Her pale skin seemed lifeless, while her eerie eyes glowed like embers, fixed on Sarah without a single blink.
Sarah screamed in terror.
Still, Joseph dismissed it as
imagination. “This land is old,” said Joseph, “but nothing evil has ever lived
here. Not that I know of.”
But it was not easy for Sarah to forget. “Something is terribly wrong,” she thought.
The Ghost Appears in Sarah's Bedroom
That night, the family enjoyed a
barbecue. Uncle Sam sang his favourite Rod Stewart songs, Joseph strummed his
guitar, and laughter filled the air. By midnight, everyone retired to their
rooms. Sarah, however, slept alone.
The silence was absolute, inside
the house and out. Sarah quickly drifted into sleep.
But then it came again.
“Sarah…”
Her eyes fluttered open. At
first, she thought it was a dream. But the voice came again, louder, raspier,
and filled with menace.
“Sarah…”
Her body stiffened. Beads of
sweat ran down her face as the moonlight revealed a corner of her room. And
there she was, the old lady.
Moonlight spilled into the room, revealing the old lady standing silently in the corner.
She looked exactly as before—her filthy, torn clothes hanging from her frail body, tangled grey hair covering part of her face, and the same horrifying grin exposing broken, yellowed teeth stained with grime.
Her pale skin looked lifeless, and her cold, glittering eyes remained fixed on Sarah, sending a chill through her entire body.
The air grew heavy, the
temperature dropped, and Sarah’s scream ripped through the silence of the farmhouse.
Her aunt rushed in, followed by
Uncle Sam and Joseph. But when they entered, the old woman was gone.
Shaking, Sarah described
everything once again. This time, her uncle’s expression changed. He pulled out
a chair and sat heavily, sighing.
“There’s something I never told you,” he began. “Years ago, before I bought this land, an old woman lived here. She was poor, frail, and the villagers avoided her, calling her a witch.
One
night, she vanished. Some say she died in these fields; others claim she was
driven away. But the truth is… no one ever found her body.”
Sarah’s eyes widened. “And now
she’s here. She’s after me.”
Uncle Sam nodded slowly. “Sometimes a restless spirit remains bound to the land where it suffered an unjust death. Maybe she feels you’ve disturbed
her ground. Maybe she’s calling you because she wants to be heard.”
The Spirit Finally Finds Peace
Sarah could hardly sleep that night. But as the clock struck two, she heard it again—
“Sarah…” This time, instead of screaming, she whispered back, “What do you want?”
The old lady appeared by the
window, her hollow eyes glinting in the moonlight. Slowly, she raised a bony
finger and pointed toward the banyan tree outside. Then, without another word,
she faded into the shadows.
The next morning, Sarah, Joseph,
and Uncle Sam dug beneath the banyan tree. To their horror, they unearthed a
pile of bones wrapped in tatters of cloth, the old woman’s remains.
Uncle Sam closed his eyes. “All
these years… she was here.”
They arranged for a proper burial with prayers, flowers, and blessings. That night, the house felt lighter, as though a dark weight had been lifted. Sarah slept peacefully for the first time.
But just before dawn, a gentle
whisper stirred her from her dreams.
“Thank you, Sarah…”
And then, silence
Years later, Sarah's experience became the most terrifying ghost story ever told in the village.
